As 2010 marches on, VIPER Recordings and its label Boss FUTUREBOUND are in full stride. With the next installments in the super popular Headroom EPs about to drop and new material from DC Breaks, Camo & Krooked, Shock One, Metrik and Furlonge in the pipeline, the label is making a strong case for best d&b label of the year! If this wasn’t enough, Futurebound and legendary production partner Matrix are set to release their second full length LP by year’s end.

All this amazing music can only mean one thing, that on Saturday August 21st 2010, Futurebound’s return to Toronto will surpass the amazing night we shared with him last year! You know, I like to think that I know a lot of shit about DnB. But every once in a while something sneaks up on me and I feel a bit silly that I missed it along the way somewhere. That’s the story with Paul T who contacted me recently and I had to admit I didn’t know of his work. Taking a look at the labels he’s released on and the artists he’s collaborated with I had to wonder how I missed his name on some of my favourite labels! I guess its not like back in the day when I spent my days at Eastern Bloc records swindling the young Toronto DnB heads out of their hard earned cash in exchange for that glorious shiney black vinyl. Well thank the lawd for this blog where I can fullfill that weird ingrained need I have to find new music and spread it to the people in any way I can.  That brings us to Paul …

Currently Paul is working on collaborations with producers Survival and Ed Oberon amonst others. His most recent signings are to Good Looking,Vampire, Phuzion, Spearhead, Future Thinkin’, and Vibez Recordings. So really this is right up my alley as those are a lot of what I’ve been enjoying the past couple of years, especially Spearhead and Future Thinkin’. Djs lending support to his sound are: Fabio, Dbridge, Survival, Sabre, Ltj Bukem, Randall, Bailey and many more…

So I went on a hunt to dig up as much info about Mr Paul T as I could find so I could spread the word. Paul T’s involvement in the electronic music scene began during 1990 at a time when the UK club and rave scene was at it’s prime. He regularly attended clubs. Seduction, Orange & Reincarnation to name few, and this led to his developing interest in DJ’ing. Then in 1993, he started DJ’ing with the Conflict agency, and it was around this period that he collaborated on productions with JD Cruz and Rachele Wallace of Suburban Bass Records. His ongoing interest in production also led to working with renowned drum and bass producer, Adam F.

With the aim of extending his musical knowledge, Paul T went back to his instrumental roots and started to play the piano again. This helped in developing his music writing skills and also led to teaching himself to play the bass guitar. It was during this time that he performed regularly with various bands around London. His extensive experience in the band scene allowed him to delve into styles that ranged from trip hop, to dub to experimental.

Paul T is currently working on collaborations with producers Survival and Edward Oberon.

His most recent signings are to Good Looking Records,Vampire Records, Phuzion Records, Spearhead Records, Future Thinkin Records, Underconstruction Records, Vibez Recordings.

After a few months of keeping a low profile, the SIM crew are back!! On this occasion we have decided to return to our roots by presenting a stellar night of soulful beats. Hailing from Amsterdam, rising star Lenzman has made a significant mark in drum and bass in a short period of time with his signature combination of deep, heavy dance floor goodness! He’s received attention from some of the most influential players in the industry, with signings to C.I.A, Metalheadz and Soul:R, Lenzman is about as hot as it gets. His hectic performance schedule has taken him across Europe and Asia, but we are proud to say that this will be his first appearance in North America. One night and only for Soul In Motion!

Backing him up on this show are two of the biggest Drum and Bass artists in Canada right now.  Mutt and Gremlinz are world travelled headliners in their own right and will be dropping a rare back 2 back set the likes of which you won’t hear again any time soon.  This is guaranteed to be one of our most musically diverse DnB events ever and if you miss it you’ll have to ship your ass to Europe to see anything like it again.

Funny how sometimes it takes someone else to notice something first before you do. This is one of those cases. This mix snuck up right under my own nose and I didn’t hear it until D-Monic posted it on his blog.

The reason its bugging me is because the mix is from Scott Free, my own partner over at Soul In Motion!!  I guess we’re just too damn busy planning cutting edge jams to know what we’re all up to on other fronts.

So speaking of what Scott has been up to, check this out from his BIO …

For a decade now Scott Free has always taken the road less traveled. A DJ who finds himself ahead of the curve when it comes to shifts in the sounds of the genre, Scott has always been a DJs DJ. Largely inspired by long time Toronto top dog, DJ Sniper of Vinyl Syndicate, Scott makes it a point to go a different route then the usual fare, ensuring that a broad spectrum of sounds are being played. Not only is he a well respected DJ in Toronto’s drum & bass scene he is also one of its hardest workers.

Now approaching its seven year anniversary, Soul In Motion is one of Toronto’s premier promotion companies. For the first five years of Soul in Motion Scott and Mr. Brown provided an outlet for the scene’s upcoming talent to show off their skills and with the addition of DJ Spinz, the last two years have seen that mentality stretch internationally as SIM has become synonymous with breaking new artists making not only their Toronto debut but also their First Canadian appearance. Artists such as: DJ Zinc, Brookes Brothers, Futurebound, Danny Byrd, Makoto, Sigma, Saburuko, Atlantic Connection & Ewun have all touched down for Soul In Motion.

This year, Scott with the help of Sike-1, started Ritual: a promotion company looking to bring in heavier acts from across the globe; their first 2 events have featured Donny from Barcode and Raiden from Offkey Music and with a third event on the way and a new member, DJ Britz, the future looks bright for this project as well.

And to round out an already busy schedule, Scott has joined DCS905 Radio as one of its resident DJs and Hosts bolstering the already strong line up of Dubcomm’s Saturday night FM standard. Ten years in with no signs of slowing down it appears that Scott Free’s mark on this scene is far from realized.

So lets get to the meat of what we’re talking about here.  Scott’s mix is smooth and flows from minimal half steppers to bouncy tech numbers with ease.  To be perfectly honest I get kind of tired of all the triple droppin’ DJs striving to mix in as many records as possible in an hour.  Here Scott goes back to basics and just delivers straight up no nonsense beats.

Not too long ago I got a message from my good friend Robb G of Promo Records about needing a DnB remix for his massive hit “12 Inch Therapy”. I said great!  I’ve needed something to kick me in the ass to get back into making music.  I immediately got in touch with Nusense (Viper Records) who I feel is currently one of the best DnB producers in Canada and asked if he’d like to collaborate.

Well here’s the result, a nice slice of minimal funk DnB with a twist in the middle.
Remixed and ready for download!  Its not like the old days where your tune could sit on dub forever and people would be sick of it by the time it came out.  This is about as fresh as it gets …

Over the past couple of months I’ve actually managed to get some live sets recorded. The SIM NYE set was good fun times but obviously went by like a flash for me so here it is for all 5 people that weren’t there

Junglist Movement is always a great time when people come together and dig deep in the crates to show where they came from.  The jam called for some old school gangster hip hop jungle and that’s what we delivered.  Listen for the sketchyness as we pretty much were just having a party on stage … if you weren’t there, check out this mix and make sure you go next year!
