FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 23 2011

Hundreds of artists, thousands of records spun … nine years of bringing the very best drum and bass events to Toronto. In this time we’ve introduced you to some of the worlds top established and upcoming artists and have collaborated with promotion companies reaching as far as London UK.

For our 9th Anniversary party we bring back The Brookes Brothers, a Toronto favourite fresh off the heals of releasing their first full length self titled album with Breakbeat Kaos. Ranging from Dubstep to Electro to their signature hi energy Drum and Bass sound, their album has been a favourite the world over hitting the top of every popular DnB record sales chart.

As the perfect complement to the Brookes Brothers party rocking anthem style, we bring you Lynx. Deep soul and heavy funk dnb vibes are his claim to fame with music such as the thunderous “Disco Dodo” tearing up the blueprint of we thought drum and bass should be. We catch Lynx while on his current North American tour hitting city after city in support of his new label Detail Recordings.

With the perfect contrast of Lynx’s unique and dynamic genre bending sets and The Brookes Brothers’ anthem bashing big room sound, this is a party worthy of being our 9 Year Anniversary mega show at the super classy Aurum Room. Get your tickets now from us online or from one of our representatives (see facebook event page) to avoid getting stuck outside in line when we hit capacity!

SOUL SESSIONS:
KASRA (Critical Music)
FRIDAY MAY 20 2011

Since the conception of his label in 2002, both Kasra and Critical Music have left an indelible mark on the scene by committing to the goal of putting out the best music the scene has to offer. The label has seen countless releases from some of the genre’s elite alongside some of its fastest rising stars; Break, Rockwell, Breakage, Cyantific, Marcus Intalex, S.P.Y, Lenzman, Calibre, Lomax & Total Science are just some of the names associated with this ever impressive catalogue of future classics.

As Critical’s figurehead, the demand for Kasra’s DJ’ing skills has escalated to a point that sees him playing regularly every week, not just in England but around the world as he pushes the Critical brand of drum & bass on a global scale.

Not content to rest on his laurels, the label now also boasts its own residency at Fabric, possibly the world’s best known electronic music venue. We believe it’s fair to say that the Critical age is only just beginning.

SIM Presents:
SIGMA (BreakBeat Kaos)
FRIDAY JUNE 3 2011

One of the biggest names in DnB make their return for “The SIGMA SHOW v3.0″. Already kicking off 2011 with remixes for both Duck Sauce’s “Barbra Streisand” and Eric Prydz “Niton”, Sigma add to their impressive list of high energy Anthems regularly featured in the sets of the scene’s top dogs such as Andy C and Dj Hype.

With two amazing visits to Toronto under their belt, Sigma’s third show is a special one as it marks the debut of an impressive new venue for Soul In Motion. Aurum Room is the most beautiful space we’ve ever used; with its state of the art lighting and a custom designed VCSS sound system, it is sure to blow your mind! Aurum is a proper upscale venue to house one of the most spectacular DnB artists in the world … because as they say, third time’s a charm!

RESIDENT ADVISOR LABEL OF THE MONTH: CRITICAL RECORDING

One of the few drum & bass labels that credibly tows the line between underground and overground, Kasra’s London imprint is one of the reasons that the genre is so vital at the moment.

While the Autonomic movement spearheaded by dBridge and Instra:mental is often credited with triggering a wholesale re-evaluation of drum & bass, there’s so much more than atmospheric halfstep to the genre’s apparent renaissance. A wealth of innovation, growth and experimentation abounds at 170 beats per minute right now, and you can’t get a much better—or more comprehensive—approximation of it all than through the discography of London’s Critical Recordings. Founded in 2002, the label has tread an invisible line between forward-thinking and orthodox drum & bass and, in the process, has survived through the genre’s nearly fatal lack of outside interest to emerge stronger than ever.

What is the “Critical Sound”? Quite simply, there isn’t one. Critical’s releases veer from out-there abstractions to straight-up bangers to minimal rattlers, traversing too many drum & bass subgenres—and there are a lot—to count. So maybe we should just start instead with the question “why critical”? “A combination of reasons, really,” answers label founder Kasra Mowlavi, “One, I like the word. It has several interpretations. Two, I wanted the label to grow into something that would be viewed as important, a key piece of the puzzle.”

Critical is all about Mowlavi. Founding the label off of his own back, the charismatic Londoner remains its sole benefactor and its driving force. “I ran an experimental tape label when I was 15, inspired by the underground DIY ideals of people like Sonic Youth and a lot of the American indie labels,” explains Mowlavi. “I’ve always had an interest in the processes involved in releasing music: the choosing of the tracks, the artwork, the packaging and how to effectively get the message across to people. Basically a lot of bits that people find boring.”

WTF is Bassweek?

Its the question people keep asking in the days leading up to the week long event that has brought together a who’s who of Toronto promotion crews and artists both International and Homegrown. While Bassweek is the brainchild of Destiny and Torontojungle, also involved are Embrace, Soul In Motion and Channel One. To get a bit more insight into what this means for Bass Music fans in Toronto, I thought I’d go right to the centre of it and talk to Jesse Brown of Destiny. Lets get the discussion going …

Spinz: How did the idea for Bassweek come about?

Jesse Brown (Destiny): The general idea is something we have wanted to do for a while but for various reasons never materialized. The end of March has always been big for EDM (Electronic Dance Music) in Toronto. Behind the scenes, it’s mostly due to artists scheduling tours around the Miami Winter Music Conference/Ultra Music Festival. For instance, for the past six years, Destiny has been able to pick up one of the ViRAM tour dates as it makes its way to and from Miami. We have also done other massive shows that are around the same time like The World of Drum & Bass which traditionally was always one to two weeks after ViRAM. Bottom line, we get all this great music at the end of March but the market gets saturated and as people pick and choose, some events may have been not as successful as they should be. Something was needed to unite all these shows together including many different shows by other promoters and BASS WEEK will do just that.

S: What do you hope to accomplish with Bassweek? Will this become a yearly thing?

JB: Yes – this is just year one and there is so much potential with what we can do as team. Toronto has always been one of the leading cities for drum & bass and breaks. I’m proud to say that the same is proving to hold true for dubstep, so the whole things is a perfect fit. I hope we can grow BASS WEEK to feature more then just a week of amazing club events and parties and continue to show the world what Toronto has done with the music and culture. At the same time, this music is more or less still an underground sound. In the end, my ultimate goal is to showcase the music we love to as many people as possible so that it continues to thrive, especially in this city.

S: You seem to be working a lot with the folks from Embrace recently. From the outside looking in, it seems like an unlikely pairing of two huge promoters that might normally be in competition. How did the idea to work together come about?

JB: Each company brings different things to the table that benefit us as a collective. In the past we have worked with many other promoters on various events from WEMF to Halloween. Collaboration efforts always stay true to the Destiny brand in that we always put the overall party experience first and focus on things like unique venues, top-quality sound and lighting effects.

S: Of all the artists performing this week, both internationally and from home, who is your own personal favourite? Is there anyone of our home town artists that you think people need to see?

JB: I’m excited to hear High Contrast again as it’s been so long but whenever asked who my favourite is, I always answer Andy C. He always plays a unique set with different tracks then the last time you heard him play and it never disappoints. There is a reason he is the world’s best drum & bass DJ and all the tops guys in the scene are not afraid to admit it. As for home-grown, Mystical Influence has the skills to move any crowd in any situation. There is so much talent spread through the week that it is hard to focus on just one.

S: People always have their opinions of what should and shouldn’t be represented at a big event such as this. What do you think you could use more of next time around? Is there an element of the music you think isn’t as represented as you’d like?

JB: I suppose there is not much in terms of breaks but it is still showcased at events like the Channel One party. People will always have opinions on what we should or shouldn’t be doing and I respect that but sometimes it seems like the most opinionated people are the ones that would never buy a ticket anyway. Ultimately we cater our events to our loyal fans. We will always push the envelope as much as we can and stay on the lookout for fresh talent. Whatever it takes to make a good party and send people away smiling.

S: Awesome, thanks Jesse for taking a minute in a busy week to give us some bassweek insight. Folks, feel free to comment or let us know what shows you’re looking forward to. See y’all through out the week!

SOUL SESSIONS : BASS WEEK

Since its creation Soul In Motion has been one of Toronto’s premier drum & bass / jungle promoters. As we move into 2011 and beyond we plan to make all genres of Bass Music integral to the SIM party experience, and with the First Bass Week there is no better platform to introduce our next venture.

On Thursday, March 31st 2011 Soul In Motion presents the launch of “SIM : Soul Sessions”. Soul Sessions will provide some of our music’s best and brightest; both local and international, an extended set to really flex their musical muscle as they move between genres smoothly and are not confined to the generic dj time slot, providing for a proper DJ experience unlike what our city is accustomed to.
